The Coimbra Group has established a scholarship programme that enables young researchers from outside the EU to conduct part of their research at a Coimbra Group university. More than 20 universities participated in the programme in 2022. The University of Bergen will join this initiative from 2025.

Participation in the programme is a means to strengthen the University of Bergen’s increased focus on Africa. The University of Bergen will participate in the Coimbra Group scholarship programme by offering two scholarships with a duration of 1 to 3 months.

The University of Bergen has defined the following requirements for the two scholarships:

  • The programme is open to all academic disciplines
  • Applicants must be doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, or junior researchers
  • Candidates must contact a potential supervisor at the University of Bergen themselves
  • The research project proposal should demonstrate how the stay will lead to further academic collaboration between the University of Bergen and the candidate’s home institution
  • Additionally, applicants must meet the requirements defined in the call for applications

The University of Bergen offers:

  • A stipend of €1800 per month (up to 3 months)
  • Travel support for a round-trip journey up to €1200
  • No insurance coverage for those accepted into the programme
  • Applicants are responsible for finding accommodation, but the University of Bergen can assist as far as possible
  • Research stays at the University of Bergen should take place during the academic year 2025/2026

Candidates should contact relevant academic departments at the University of Bergen directly. Departments are free to decide whether they wish to accept a scholar under this scheme. If the application is supported, the supervisor’s department will prepare an invitation letter to be included in the application.
