Update September 6th: The maximum number of attendees has now been reached, and registration information has thus been removed from these pages.

In recent years, UiB students and staff, together with our partners, have cleared more than 8.5 tons of plastic and other marine pollution from our coast. This is an important contribution to improving the situation for life in and around the ocean, but the fight against plastic pollution is far from over!

This year, the Plastics Network and the Sustainability Pilots at UiB are once again inviting students and staff to a major clean-up campaign on Thursday, September 12th. The action is organized in collaboration with the Bergen Outdoor Recreations Council (BOF) and Naturvernforbundet Hordaland.

This is a kickoff to the national beach clean-up week “Strandryddeuka”, organized by Keep Norway Beautiful from September 13th to 22nd.

The registration deadline is September 8th.

Note: There are limited spots, and the first-come, first-served principle applies. To secure your spot, please register early!

What’s happening?

This year, the trip goes by bus from Bergen bus station to Hellesøy, where boats will be ready to take participants out to what has often been referred to as the “plastic island” Lisle Lyngøy. The island has recently been the focal point for a research project led by NORCE, in collaboration with the University of Bergen, Clean Shores Global, and TAM NJFF Hordaland, represented by Kenneth Bruvik.

In addition to making an effort for nature and marine life, UiB’s plastic clean-up campaigns are a great way to get to know fellow students, staff, and organizations that are concerned with the environment and climate.

As part of the event, there will also be a social gathering and an interesting program indoors, at Hengjo on Hellesøy.

Free lunch will be served.

Time:

Date: September 12th.

Departure is from Bergen bus station at 9 AM, and we aim to be back at the same place by 3 PM.

All registered participants will be contacted with more detailed information before the event.
