LAS 303/603 - Laboratory Animal Science modules for fish-researchers

This course will focus on farm- and laboratory fish as research animals.

Together with LAS 301/601, the requirement for theoretical training is covered for persons who plan and carry out experiments on fish

The course is conducted in English and the syllabus is defined based on the modules EU Framework for the Training of Laboratory Animal Personnel

Together with LAS 301/601, LAS 303/603 covers the species specific, theoretical part of the education for researchers that use animals in research based Mattilsynets demands and the EU framework.

The following modules are included in LAS 303

• Module 1 - Special regulations for holding and use of fish in Norway
• Module 2 - Ethics
  • Paradoxes and inconsistencies on the use of aquatic animals
• Module 3 Basic and appropriate biology
  • Focus on A.Salmon, Rainbow trout, Zebrafish and Medaka
• Module 4 Animal care, health and management
  • Diet and nutrition
  • Diseases in fish
  • Welfare issues in fish studies
  • Environment, welfare, and behavior
  • Aquatic animal facility systems
  • Human health hazards in the aquatic facility
• Module 5 Recognition of pain, suffering and distress
  • Defining endpoints and score sheet in fish research
• Module 6 Humane methods of killing fish
  • Regulations and guidelines
• Module 20/21 Anesthesia in fish
  • Pain and nociception in fish, (incl cognitive abilities in fish)
  • Special considerations for anesthesia of aquatic animals

• 2 consecutive days of physical lectures in Bergen with experts in their fields
