Topic of the talk

In a digital media landscape characterized by audience fragmentation and algorithmically curated feeds, it is increasingly challenging to study how users encounter and engage with news. A new method that shows great promise in this area is data donation, which refers to the tools and processes through which individuals make available for academic research the data that digital platforms (e.g. Google, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn) collect about them (Araujo et al. 2020).

Combining data donations with think-aloud protocols and in-depth interviews, in this talk I will discuss 1) how research participants experience and understand the data donation process, and 2) what data donation can add to our understanding of how people engage with digital news.
