Cyclone dynamics in middle and high latitudes

Higher pressure systems with their frontal bands are characteristics of our daily weather. Sometimes these systems can become extreme and cause a lot of damage.

Main content

We investigate the life cycles of extra-tropical and Arctic cyclones using theory and modeling. We also have a special focus on the interaction of cyclones and their frontal systems with orography, the ocean and the sea-ice. A particular interest lies on polar lows, which occur poleward of the main baroclinic zone in the mid-latitudes, as well as on extreme cyclones which often feature extreme wind speeds and heavy rain fall in autumn and winter.

The main focus is on process understanding and development of new concepts using theory and idealized modeling. We also perform case studies to test model suites and try to identify potential deficiencies in numerical model for future model improvements.
