Botanical collection and expeditions

At the heart of our collections are wild-origin plants, many acquired during collecting trips by our staff

Staff at the gardens regularly collect plant samples, herbarium vouchers, and seed (with appropriate research/collecting permits) for the purposes of research, conservation, and display at the gardens.

We use the open science platform iNaturalist to document our observations of wild plants (and other organisms) in the field, and we encourage everyone to do so too! Here is a presentation by Michael Pirie and Heidi Lie Andersen for the IrisBG coffee chats on the subject in 2024:
