The Faculty of Humanities is a multidisciplinary faculty that currently teaches more than 3700 students and offers a substantial number of programmes leading to a wide range of academic and professional qualifications. These cover a variety of disciplines within the areas of philosophy, language studies, history and cultural studies, aesthetic and literary studies.

Dr. Margit H. Simon is awarded a prestigious ERC Consolidator Grant of 2,17 million Euros to lead the PIONEER project which will transform our understanding of how environmental factors shaped the evolution of behavioural complexity in early Homo sapiens.

Nordic research team receives €13 million to explore medieval book culture 

Åslaug Ommundsen from the University of Bergen, along with three Nordic research partners, has been awarded an ERC Synergy Grant to investigate how books and literary networks shaped Northern Europe between 1000 and 1500 CE.

12 million to the history of salmon farming, sustainability, and Norway’s role in Chile

Ernesto Semán at the University of Bergen has been awarded 12 million NOK from the Research Council of Norway for the project DARKLAX. Through an interdisiplinary approach DARKLAX will tell the history of salmon farming in Chile and the role Norway has played.

Ancient proteins reveal secrets of Uvdal Stave Church

A new study published in Scientific Reports shows that hide glue made from calfskin was used as a binder in the paints used to produce Uvdal stave church’s decorations. Surprisingly, tests also uncovered traces of human saliva.
