Hovedinnhold

In 2023, the Special Collections of the University Library of UiB celebrates the sixtieth anniversary of the donation of a facsimile of the Munkeliv Psalter from the then Czechoslovakian government to Norway. This psalter, written in the middle of the 15th century at the Benedictine and Birgittine monastery known as Munkeliv on the Nordnes peninsula, has long been noted for its importance to the history of medieval written culture in Bergen. However, the original manuscript, held at the Library of the Prague Metropolitan Chapter, is not yet accessible online.

The three-volume facsimile kept at the Special Collections with the shelfmark UBB-MS-1547 represents a unique testament to the original volume written by the Birgittines of Munkelivet. At the same time, the facsimile has its own significance as a token of Cold War academic exchange and as a witness to the practice of creating facsimiles in 1960s-era Czechoslovakia.

This jubilee is therefore an excellent opportunity to examine more closely not only UBB-MS-1547, but also the concept of the facsimile. We will explore different traditions for creating facsimiles in general, their use in teaching and research, as well as their production and distribution in the modern market.

The Special Collections of the University of Bergen Library has invited world-renowned specialists on these topics for a panel discussion.

The panel discussion will be in English.
