Which courses can I get started with?
Hovedinnhold
The first courses one takes in pure mathematics will typically be
- MAT211 Real analysis (autumn semester)
- MAT220 Algebra (spring semester)
The course MAT211 Real analysis introduces you to the fundamental concepts and results in modern analysis. It is a basic course that is obligatory in all lines of study in pure mathematics.
The course MAT220 Algebra gives you insight in the fundamental modern algebraic structures: groups, rings and fields. These give the basic concepts that are used in reasoning and the presentation of mathematics today. The course is obligatory in all lines of study in pure mathematics.
We recommend to take MAT211 in the third semester and MAT220 in the fourth semester, but it is also possible to take MAT220 in other semesters.
After or together with MAT211 and MAT220, it is natural to take other bachelor courses in pure mathematics:
- MAT213 Functions of a Complex Variable (spring)
- MAT214 Theory of Complex Functions
- MAT215 Theory of Measure and Integration (spring)
- MAT221 Discrete Mathematics (autumn)
- MAT224 Commutative Algebra (autumn)
- MAT225 Number Theory
- MAT227 Combinatorics
- MAT232 Functional Analysis (spring)
- MAT242 Topology (autumn)
- MAT243 Manifolds (spring)
The course MAT221 Discrete Mathematics gives a solid introduction to number theory, graph theory, enumeration and combinatorics. It can be taken already in the first semester of the study of mathematics.
