Research interests: My research interests are mainly within the field of health psychology and psychiatric epidemiology. I am the project manager of a project investigating the relationship between sleep problems and alcohol use, using data from the Tromsø Study. The main research questions that will be addressed are: 1) Is change in alcohol use or sleeplessness related to change in the other, and which is the strongest predictor of change? and 2) Are co-occurring sleep and alcohol problems related to increased risk of mental and somatic health problems, chronic pain or use of social welfare benefits relative to non-co-occurring sleep and alcohol problems and to the general population?

Another research interest of mine is within the field of physical activity and depression. Particularly among adolescents, this relationship is unclear, as the cross-sectional studies tend to find an association, whereas the results of longitudinal studies are varied. Studies using objective data tend not to find a relationship that lasts over time. A PhD-student will start working on the project in 2017. In this project, we aim at investigating 1) the longitudinal relationship between physical activity and depression, 2) the importance of physical activity levels and patterns in relation to depression, and 3) the relationship between sedentary behaviour and depression.

The burden of living with an alcohol abusing or mentally ill family member is also a research interest of mine. In my PhD, I investigated the mental health of family members of alcohol abusers, by using data from the Nord-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT). I am currently involved in a project where students at the professional program of psychology at UiT the arctic university of Tromsø will investigate the manner in which health care workers maintain the interests of children of mentally and somatically ill parents. The student assignments will be sought published in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
