Hybrid seminar on the future of the single market
Today, Centenol held its third hybrid seminar, titled "Where is the Single Market Heading?"
Main content
The event featured Professor Catherine Barnard from the University of Cambridge and Deputy Director Mona Næss from Norway's Ministry of Labour and Social Inclusion, with the conversation led by BERGs Ingrid Margrethe Halvorsen Barlund.
2024 has seen the release of several significant EU reports, including the Letta report on the future of the single market in the spring, followed by the Draghi report on European competitiveness in the autumn. Authored by former Italian prime ministers Enrico Letta and Mario Draghi, these reports explore how the EU can address current challenges, enhancing European competitiveness while preserving its social economy model and core values.
In this conversation, Professor Barnard and Deputy Director Næss highlighted key findings from these reports, providing insights into strengthening the single market. Professor Barnard offered a UK perspective on European competitiveness, while Mona Næss contributed an EEA viewpoint, informed by her work within the social rights field. The speakers discussed how non-member states like the UK and EEA/EFTA countries might safeguard their interests as the EU pursues greater competitiveness.
The seminar attracted both in-person and online attendees eager to gain insight into the latest reports on European competitiveness and economic development. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Barnard and Næss for traveling to Bergen to hold the seminar and for an enlightening and engaging conversation on the future of the single market.
