The HACON cruise may provide new insights into the biology and geochemistry of the mid-ocean ridge in ice-covered portions of the Arctic Ocean.
Dr. Achim Mall recently received a two year postdoctoral fellowship from the German Research Foundation. He will be working with carbon fixation in hydrothermal systems as part of the microbiology group at the K.G. Jebsen Centre. We congratulate and welcome him to our centre!
We thank everyone who visited our stand at the Passion for Ocean festival on Saturday! There was for sure a lot of interest for exploring deep sea rocks and living microorganisms.
Scientists at the K.G. Jebsen Centre are sampling the volcanic seafloor in remote and previously unexplored areas.
Rolf Birger Pedersen and his research team are exploring manganese crusts in the deep ocean. Videos from the 2019 cruise provide unique glimpses of the scientific activity on board.
The annual conference "Seabed Mapping and Survey" was arranged in Geilo in early March. The conference is an international venue for technological development, exploration of sea surface and seafloor and development of techniques for assessing mineral and renewable resources in the ocean.
Happy 40th anniversary to black smoker vents! On April 21st,1979, deep sea explorers in the submersible HOV Alvin took the first ever photo of a "black smoker" hydrothermal vent.
Anders Bjerga and Håvard Stubseid at the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research won this year's public outreach contest at geoforskning.no with their contribution on submarine volcanic activity.
Monday 3. June, Eirik Gjerløw successfully defended his thesis "Holocene volcanic activity and hazards of Jan Mayen, North-Atlantic".
We congratulate the freshly minted PhD!
Friday 31 May, Karin Landschulze successfully defended her PhD thesis “Geophysical investigation of the Hugin Fracture, a soft-sediment seafloor fracture on the Utsira High, North Sea – Implications for subsurface fluid migration”.
We congratulate the freshly minted PhD!
Minerals and Metals for Green Technologies was the main theme for the NGF winter conference 2019, January 7th - 9th. Many of our PhD and master students presented their work during the conference and it was of great success.
From journeys into mines to explorations of volcanoes on the ocean floor, deep voyages reveal the richness of the planet’s deep biosphere.
The 47th Under Water Mining conference (UMC18) was hosted in Bergen, Grieghallen, from 11th to 14th of September. The conference was organized in collaboration with the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research (UiB), Global Centres of Expertise Subsea (GCE Subsea) and the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD). We are pleased to announce that the conference was of great success.
Leif-Erik Rydland Pedersen i spennende og aktuelt intervju med NRK.
Associate professor Eoghan Reeves at the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research involved in a new study featured by the Deep Carbon Observatory.
Researchers at KG Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research are involved in Biotech projects to search for and utilize enzymes from the AMOR hydrothermal vent fields.
In august this year two scientists from the K.G. Jebsen Centre for Deep Sea Research led a session called "Geobiology of the Deep Ocean and Subsurface: Contributions of the Deep Biosphere to Earth Systems" during the yearly Goldschmidt conference, giving the stage to geochemists, microbiologists and geologists working on deep-sea environments.
Our researcher Steffen Leth Jørgensen is one of the principle investigators of the SUSTAIN project and along with an international team of researchers he will exploit the opportunity to investigate the deep biosphere on the volcanic island Surtsey.
