Main content

This project aims to investigate language practices and language needs among international employees in academia in Norway. International employees are, in this context, employees with a different first language (mother tongue) than Norwegian, Swedish, or Danish. By means of an electronic survey and in-depth interviews, we attempt to:

  • Map language practices among international employees at Norwegian universities and university colleges
  • Examine the conditions for learning Norwegian among international employees at Norwegian universities and university colleges
  • Examine how the international employees themselves evaluate their need for Norwegian language competence
  • Examine the various reasons for using or not using Norwegian in various work-related situations/settings
  • Identify challenges international employees are facing when learning Norwegian at a Norwegian university or university college
