Research Group for Nordic Languages

The Research Group in Nordic Languages is a meeting place for employees and students who study the Norwegian or Nordic (Danish, Swedish, Icelandic, Faroese) languages. Members of the group share a common foundation in Nordic languages, but the research activities cover a wide range of different and varied topics within Nordic linguistics.

Main content

The Research Group in Nordic Language is open to anyone conducting research on the Norwegian language or any of the other Nordic languages.

We have Thursday afternoons as our meeting day, and anyone who has something they wish to share or discuss can present it at these meetings. The meetings typically take the form of presentations and discussions, but we have also successfully held meetings where we provide feedback on each other’s texts. The research group is also a great opportunity to present material for upcoming conferences to receive initial feedback on strengths and weaknesses. We maintain an informal tone and are committed to supporting and helping each other become better researchers.

Periodically, we organize writing seminars for master's students, where students present parts of their theses and receive feedback from peers and staff.

Topics discussed in the meetings are those we are currently interested in. For example:

  • Language history and language change
  • Dialects, sociolects, and language attitudes
  • Semantics and pragmatics
  • Language contact and heritage languages
  • Technical language and terminology
  • Norwegian as a second language
  • Phonology and grammar
  • Text linguistics
  • Personal and place names (onomastics)
  • Norwegian disciplinary didactics
