Atmospheric Dynamics

Atmospheric dynamics deals with the physical understanding of the atmospheric flow. In our group we have particular foci on cyclones, storm tracks, meso-scale flow over and around mountains and Arctic weather.

Storm-track Dynamics

Extratropical cyclones are the atmospheric disturbances that create much of the weather we experience. These cyclones travel along relatively narrow bands in the midlatitudes, regions known as "storm tracks".

Orographic influence on atmospheric flow

Orography influences the atmospheric flow on a wide range of scales. We investigate meso-scale flow over and around mountains as well as the influence of mountain ranges on cyclone and storm track dynamics.

Cyclone dynamics in middle and high latitudes

Higher pressure systems with their frontal bands are characteristics of our daily weather. Sometimes these systems can become extreme and cause a lot of damage.
