The overall objective of the research group is clinical research on health and developement in children at risk and medical care of diseased children. Research areas are pediatric interventions, short- and long-term outcome related to fetal and neonatal period, growth, organ function and general development in the young. Research methods include follow-up of cohorts, clinical trials and register based studies.

The group cooperates closely with the Department of Paediatrics at Haukeland University Hospital and Stavanger University Hospital as well as Helse Fonna and Helse Førde. In addition there is broad cooperation with other research groups locally as well as nationally and internationally.

The founder of the group, Trond Markestad, has since decades contributed significantly to pediatric knowledge through research, textbooks and teaching. His most significant contributions are measures to avoid sudden infant death syndrome and the focus on premature birth and its consequences. He has been rewarded numerous scientific prices (Royal medal, Meltzer) and was appointed honorary member of the Norwegian Pediatric Society in 2017.

The Heart-Lung test lab established more than 20 years ago by Thomas Halvorsen and Gottfried Greve has made it possible to do exercise testing giving important new knowledge, as has the establishment of new growth curves by Robert Bjerknes and Pétur Juliusson. In Stavanger a strong pediatric research environment is built up by Knut Øymar.
