This initiative was launched at the University of Bergen in 2020 to strengthen critical thinking on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as part of the university's education.

In autumn 2019 the Education Committee at UiB passed the plan Education 2030 (Utdanning 2030), where a number of measures to promote critical thinking around the 2030 Agenda. Among the measures promoted were a new MA on the SDGs and a bottom-up initiative called the Sustainability Education Collective (Bærekraftskollegiet).

This is a broad initiative taking in all UiB’s seven faculties. The idea is that the collective will have an advisory role in SDG-oriented education, fully independent of the university leadership.

Coordination and synergy

The starting point for the collective was to explore learning across disciplines and to avoid the "silo thinking" permeating academia.

The collective provides a meeting place to discuss possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration across faculties and departments, that may have different approaches and alternative knowledges on SDG education.

The collegium also aims to work with international partners, such as CHARM-EU, that can provide coordination and synergy.
