Main content

Welcome to the subject pages for music!

The former library of the Grieg Academy is integrated into the Library for Social Sciences, Music and Psychology, and you find us at Fosswinckels gate 14.

On our shelves you will find literature for most subjects related to music: philosophy, history, musicology, pedagogy/education, music therapy, instruments and their technique, composition, and more. Our sheet music collection contains a wide variety of score, study scores, and performance material.

On this landing page I have compiled general useful resources for all students at the Grieg Academy. For more discipline-specific resources, follow these links:

Subject pages for music performance and composition

  • Tuesday: 08:30-18:00
  • Wednesday: 08:00-15:30
  • Thursday: 08:00-15:30

Books and printed journals are otherwise available between 06:00-24:00 all week, accessible with your student card.

Oria

Oria is your starting point in searching and finding materials you need during your study period at the Grieg Academy. Whether it is scores and sheet music, dictionaries and encyclopedias, journals and magazines, or literature related to a topic you're writing about; Oria is the place to begin your search.

Search in Oria:

  • Printed scores and sheet music are shelved according to the SMM-system, using letters and numbers for instrumentation/ensemble types. For example: C 1 for piano music; H 131 for clarinet with piano; M 3110 for string quartet.
  • Books are shelved according to the Dewey Decimal Classification system, using letters for different topics. For example: 780.7 for general music pedagogy; 780.92 for composer biographies; 784 for orchestral music.

Scores and sheet music: Under "Advanced search" select "Music" under "Material type" on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side under "All fields" you can specify your search terms: "Title" or "Composer." Note: Do not use "Author" when searching for scores after composer name!

Books: Under "Advanced search" select "Books" under "Material type" on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side under "All fields" you can specify your search terms: "Title" or "Author."

Articles: Under "Advanced search" select "Articles" under "Material type" on the right-hand side. On the left-hand side under "All fields" you can specify your search terms: "Title" or "Author." Oria will let you know if the library has a subscription to the journal that the article is published in, or if we have to purchase the article for you.

Thesis writing and reference management

  • Søk&Skriv (in English): An essential resource for you when getting started on your writing process. In addition to study techniques and help with searching, you also find help for critically assessing your sources, and how to refer to them according to general principles of academic credibility and integrity.
  • EndNote: This program helps you collect, organize, and refer to the source material for your assignments and thesis.

On copying music

In general it is prohibited to copy music. The University of Bergen has an agreement with Kopinor that grants students permission to copy a certain amount:

  • 15% of a score, but
  • maximum 10 pages.

IMPORTANT! The agreement concerns "internal use" for students. This means that you can make practice copies of repertoire you want to try out, but if you are performing it, you need to either purchase it or use the library's scores.
