HISTORICAL PLANTS OF BERGEN

Atriplex hortensis (garden orache)

Leafy vegetable from the Middle Ages

Main content

Garden orache is found in archaeological remains since the 10th and 11th centuries in Scandinavia. It originated in the wild in Eastern Europe, but is now widespread in many countries with temperate climates.

It is found naturalised here and there on waste land in Norway, in Eastern Norway more often, growing as a weed. Previously, it was also grown as a vegetable. The plant is rarely used today in the Nordic countries, but is still grown on the continent, where the leaves are eaten in the same way as spinach.

Garden orache is available in several leaf-colour variants. We have ‘Green Plume’ and ‘Red Plume’.
