Main content

Here we highlight several Rhododendron species that you might see in flower around May. We include some short videos recorded at the end of May 2021, after a particularly cold winter in which flowering was delayed. They are presented by Emeritus Professor Per Magnus Jørgensen, in Norwegian with English subtitles. Information based on his book, ‘Rhododendron i Det norske arboret på Milde’ and the Flora of China.

Rhododendron hippophaeoides

Rhododendron hippophaeoides forms bushes up to 1.5 m tall with narrow leaves that are silvery-grey on the upper side and produces clusters of pale lavender-blue, relatively large flowers up to 2.5 cm wide. Found in the wild in Yunnan and Sichuan, usually in bogs at 2,400-4,800 m elevation.

Rhododendron fastigiatum
