DIGSSCORE Seminar: Can Constructive News Counter News Avoidance?

Erik Knudsen, University of Bergen, will present for us today.

How can journalism capture the attention of audiences who actively avoid the news? This presentation examines whether constructive journalism—emphasizing solutions and forward-looking narratives—can help reduce news avoidance. Using a pre-registered experiment with 2,270 Norwegian adults, we tracked user behavior on a simulated news site to assess whether solution-focused news can counteract avoidance among those most inclined to avoid the news based on their immediate state of mind.
