UiB aims to reduce energy consumption by 30% by 2030, compared to 2018 which was around 79.9GWh (UiB Bærekraft).

Now it is the University Gardens' turn to improve our sustainability. This summer, the area around the glasshouses at Milde has been excavated to install a ground source heating system. Fourteen holes were drilled around the glasshouses, with an average depth of 250-270 m, to collect the warmth stored in the ground. This heat is captured and led through liquid-filled pipes up to an indoor heat pump. This will primarily be used for temperature regulation of the glasshouses.

In addition, almost 350m2 of solar panels have been installed on all our available roofs, to cover even more of the electricity consumption. It should provide enough electricity to power 2-3 average detached houses. Of course, that depends on the weather - we are excited to see how much of a difference it will make.
