Gender Dimension in Research

NO DEADLINE FOR REGISTRATION - PLEASE JOIN IF YOU ARE INTERESTED! This course introduces the basics of incorporating gender-related and sex-specific issues into theorethical and applied research that does not otherwise address sex and gender. Such a gender-sensitive approach is increasingly becoming a mandatory element of project proposals in all programmes of the European Research Area.

Main content

A gender-sensitive approach enhances the quality and validity of a research project by making the research findings more relevant to all members of society, thus counteracting gender biases that are embedded in the history of science, medicine and technology.

A gender-sensitive approach is increasingly becoming an indispensable component of interdisciplinary studies.

Course description

Gender-sensitive research takes into account the differences between men and women (and male and female bodies) in all aspects of research, from the initial idea, through the formulation of research questions, objectives, and methods, to the results and presentation of findings. In addition to integrating gender into content, a gender-sensitive approach seeks equal participation of women and men in scholarly work. A gender-sensitive approach also considers transgender and transsexual people.

The course is based on the Toolkit for Integrating Gender-Sensitive Approach into Research and Teaching (GARCIA Working Paper No. 6, University of Trento, 2015) co-authored by Jovana Mihajlović Trbovc and Ana Hofman. This toolkit/manual has been cited in a number of scholarly and professional publications dealing with the integration of gender perspectives in research and teaching, and its methodological approach has been used in international studies on topics as diverse as “Gender Differences in Syrian Refugees in Jordan” and “Gender-Based Analysis of the Psychological Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Healthcare Workers in Spain.

Course objective

Participants will leave the course with a basic understanding of the fundamental concepts of the gender-sensitive approach, and a starting point for applying such an approach in their own research. Therefore, the course will provide the following:

- a basic understanding of sex- and gender-sensitive concepts;
- steps for integrating gender into a research project;
- information on additional resources.

Participants will be invited to brainstorm ways to integrate sex-specific or gender-related issues into their own research, such as post-doctoral projects.

Target group

Researchers from all fields and disciplines, who are not familiar with gender studies. Particularly relevant for those who have no prior knowledge of the subject.
