At the University of Bergen, all teaching, administration, language and everyday communication is normally conducted in Norwegian.

As an international research university, however, the university attaches importance to ensuring that some of the activities are conducted in English or other international languages. 

The University shall maintain a high linguistic level in both Norwegian and foreign languages.

Use of Norwegian at UiB

In addition to the internal language policy goals, the university is also bound by the statutory rules in the Language Act concerning use of Bokmål and Nynorsk online, in print and in social media.

Technical language and terminology

The university is responsible for the maintenance and further development of Norwegian technical language and terminology.

Translation, copy-editing and proofreading

UiB has signed a framework agreement with Semantix for translation, copy-editing and proofreading services.
