Exploring the biosphere under the ocean (31.08.2023)

Underneath the ocean floor, thrives a vast biosphere which activity profoundly impacting our global environment; from the air that we breathe, to the balance of the global carbon budget. The functioning of this biosphere is what the new director at the Centre for Deep Sea Research at UiB, Steffen Leth Jørgensen, seeks to understand.

GoNorth expedition 2023

Discovers new hydrothermal field between Svalbard and Greenland (31.08.2023)

Scientists taking part in the 2023 GoNorth expedition have discovered a new hydrothermal field – an area with sea floor hot springs – in the Lena Trough, part of a mid-ocean ridge between Svalbard and Greenland.

The GONORTH cruise was a success! (21.08.2023)

Early August, the GONORTH cruise organised by several Norwegian institutions came to an end. On its last ROV dive, a new hydrothermal vent field, named Ultima Thule, was discovered on the Lucky Ridge!

UiB hosts European expedition (21.08.2023)

Traversing European Coastlines (TREC) is a continent-wide expedition addressing environmental challenges along the coasts of Europe. On their northernmost stop, the team was based at the Espegrend Marine Biological Station, hosted by the University of Bergen.

Joint CEDAS & NORBIS Summer School 2023 August 7 - 11 (15.08.2023)

From August 7 - 11, 50+ data scientists from across Norway came together at the Joint CEDAS-NORBIS Summer School to discuss data science and its biomedical applications. The summer school featured keynotes, theoretical and practical sessions on Machine Learning, Statistics, and Visual Data Science.

Tara visits Bergen during its two-year TREC scientific expedition (14.08.2023)

Members of the Michael Sars Centre had the exclusive opportunity to visit the research vessel Tara on Friday while the schooner was in Bergen for samples, supplies, and fuel. Afterwards, Tara researchers visited the Centre for a reciprocal tour of our marine facilities.

This June MSc student Susanne Zazzera completed her thesis titled "Bumblebee communities in open and overgrown heathlands in Nordhordland UNESCO Biosphere, Vestland, Norway", which was supervised by UNESCO Chair Inger Måren, NIBIO researcher Bjørn Arild Hatteland, and PhD student Ieva Rozite-Arina.
